What's the Process for a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

Step 1: We Listen First

Your first visit is about understanding you — your symptoms, health history, and goals. We assess posture, core, hips, and pelvic floor muscles (internal exam only if you’re comfortable) to find the root cause. You’ll also receive your first treatment and simple home strategies, plus a clear plan for what comes next.

Step 2: Hands-On Therapy & Exercise

  • Pelvic Physiotherapy sessions generally happen once a week (sometimes 1-2x/week if needed), for about 4-12 weeks initially (longer if chronic or complex).
  • Each session includes manual therapy (internal/external soft tissue work, mobility, trigger point release, joint work), therapeutic exercises (strength, endurance, coordination), breathing & posture work, and home exercise programme tailored to you.
  • You'll also receive education: how your behaviours (fluid intake, toileting habits, posture, activities) impact pelvic floor function; what “normal” looks like; techniques to manage symptoms during daily life.

Step 3: Lasting Results

  • At each session and periodically (e.g. every few weeks), we review your symptoms: what’s improved, what still bothers you, how home exercises are going. We adjust the plan accordingly.
  • Around weeks 2-4, you’ll often see early changes (e.g. less pain, better control, greater awareness). By about weeks 6-8, more noticeable gains usually occur.
  • Once major improvements are made, we shift toward maintenance: fewer sessions, more independent work, integrating pelvic floor strength & coordination into your daily movements, preventing relapse.
  • Total full course (from assessment through maintenance) depends: many clients do well with 2-4 months; more severe or long-standing issues may take 6+ months.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I’m postpartum?

Pelvic floor therapy is one of the most effective ways to support recovery after childbirth — whether it was a vaginal or C-section delivery. Therapy can help with core strength, leakage, pelvic heaviness, or pain that lingers after delivery. Most people can safely begin therapy around 6 weeks postpartum (once cleared by their physician), but even months or years later, treatment can still make a huge difference.

Will I be embarrassed?

It’s completely normal to feel nervous before your first appointment. Our therapists are specially trained, compassionate professionals who create a private, respectful, and supportive environment. Everything is explained step by step, and nothing is ever done without your consent. You’ll always be treated with dignity, and many clients say they felt at ease within the first few minutes.

Do you treat men, women, and all genders?

Yes. While pelvic floor therapy is often associated with women’s health, all people have pelvic floor muscles — and anyone can benefit from therapy. We treat women, men, and non-binary individuals experiencing issues such as leakage, pain, urgency, pelvic organ prolapse, erectile pain, or post-surgical recovery. Every treatment plan is tailored to your unique anatomy and needs.

Is pelvic floor therapy covered by insurance?

In most cases, yes. Pelvic floor physiotherapy is billed the same way as standard physiotherapy, which means it’s often covered by extended health insurance plans. Coverage amounts vary by provider, so we recommend checking with your insurer in advance. Our front desk team can also provide receipts and direct billing where available, to make the process as easy as possible.

Can I do pelvic floor therapy when I’m pregnant?

Yes — in fact, pelvic floor therapy can be very helpful during pregnancy. It’s safe when performed by a specially trained pelvic health physiotherapist, and treatments are always adapted to your stage of pregnancy. Therapy can ease back or pelvic pain, improve core support, and prepare your body for delivery by teaching relaxation and strengthening techniques. It can also reduce the risk of complications postpartum. As always, we’ll coordinate with your healthcare provider to ensure treatment is appropriate for you.
