What is that cracking sound in chiropractic adjustments? Are adjustments safe?

An adjustment (also known as joint manipulations) is when your chiropractor applies directed & controlled force to your joints to restore limited range of motion, decrease pain, and reduce nerve irritation.

The “crack” you hear during your adjustment is just the joints opening up. Think about a suction cup releasing from a wall. It is NOT your bones “cracking”. When your joints are stiff, there’s a lot of pressure that is built up in the joint space – and the “pop” is just the sound of that pressure releasing.

Yes – adjustments are safe! Your Chiropractor has been trained for years in the art & science of proper joint manipulations. They will always perform a thorough assessment to ensure adjustments are safe and beneficial for you – and will always work within your comfort level.
