Understanding Pelvic Organ Prolapse and How Therapy Helps

Feeling “Off”? We’ve Got Your Back

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP)-it’s the sort of thing nobody wants to talk about. But if you’ve got it, it’s never far from your mind. As someone who likes to be active, it can impact your quality of life like crazy. You feel pressure or heaviness in your pelvis, maybe a bulge. Or it’s just not “right.” Hard to enjoy running, lifting, walking-hell, getting out of bed. If you’re annoyed, worried, scared, or just want to move without freaking out, you’re not alone-and you don’t have to just live with it.

Axis Therapy & Performance is here for you. We work with people across the GTA who are trying to figure out what’s going on with their bodies. When you come to us, you’ll get an actual reason why you feel “off” and a real plan to recover. POP is more common than you might think. But it’s not a given-and it doesn’t have to define your life. Here’s what you need to know about pelvic organ prolapse, why it happens, and how therapy can help.

What Is Pelvic Organ Prolapse?

Pelvic organ prolapse is a condition that occurs when the muscles and connective tissues that support your pelvic organs (bladder, uterus, or rectum) become stretched or weakened. This can lead to one or more of your pelvic organs dropping or pressing into your vaginal wall. The result? Symptoms such as:

  • Heaviness, pressure, or a “falling out” sensation in the pelvis.
  • A visible or palpable bulge in the vaginal area.
  • Difficulty with exercise, walking, or standing for long periods.
  • Leaking urine or trouble emptying the bladder completely.
  • Discomfort or pain during intercourse.
  • POP is especially common after pregnancy and childbirth, as the pelvic floor muscles and connective tissues can be stretched or weakened during these events. It can also be caused by activities that put strain on the pelvic floor, such as heavy lifting, or years of high-impact sport. But it can happen to anyone, at any age.

Why Does Pelvic Organ Prolapse Happen?

It’s not as simple as cause and effect. Many of the most common factors include:

  • Risk Factor Real-Life Implication
  • Pregnancy & Childbirth Stretching and pressure on the pelvic floor muscles during pregnancy and birth.
  • Heavy Lifting & High-impact Sports Repetitive strain on the pelvic support structures.
  • Chronic Coughing or Constipation Persistent pressure on the pelvic floor from coughing or straining.
  • Age & Hormonal Changes Natural weakening of muscles and tissues over time.
  • Genetics You can be more genetically predisposed to prolapse than others.
  • If you’re active, enjoy lifting, or have had pregnancies, you’re not “broken”-you just need the right support and approach.

Pelvic Floor Therapy for Prolapse

Pelvic floor therapy is a specialized form of physiotherapy that focuses on the muscles and connective tissues that support your pelvic organs. It’s about more than just “doing Kegels.” Axis Therapy & Performance takes a performance-driven, individualized, real movement approach. It works:

1. Comprehensive Assessment

We start with a real conversation about your symptoms, goals, and movement. We then assess how your pelvic floor, core, and hips are functioning together to uncover the root cause, not just the symptoms.

2. Hands-On Treatment and Movement Retraining

Our therapists use manual therapy, release techniques, and movement drills to restore normal pelvic floor function. We teach you how to activate, relax, and coordinate your pelvic floor muscles, so you’re not just stronger but smarter in your movement.

3. Confidence-Building for Real Life

Whether you want to get back to running, lifting, or just move without discomfort, we create a plan that fits your life. This includes targeted exercises, practical strategies, and ongoing support to help you trust your body again.

4. Education and Empowerment

We don’t just treat you; we teach you. You’ll learn why prolapse happens, how to prevent it from getting worse, and what to do if symptoms flare up. Our goal is to give you the tools to stay strong and active for the long term.

Real-World Example: The Lifter Who Wouldn’t Quit

Meet Sam, a Toronto weekend warrior who started feeling pelvic heaviness and a bulge after increasing her deadlift weight. She thought she had to give up lifting. At Axis, we discovered her pelvic floor was overworked and not coordinating with her core. Through hands-on therapy, movement retraining, and a customized plan, Sam got back to lifting-confident, strong, and symptom-free.
